Virus.VBS.Gum

Class Virus
Platform VBS
Description

Technical Details

This virus impairs the victim machine’s functionality. It is 1,126 bytes in size. It is an HTML file. It is written in Visual Basic Script (VBS).

Payload

When launched, the virus removes the ‘read-only’ attribute from the following file:

C:Windowssystem.dat

The file will then be deleted.

The virus also deletes the following files:

C:autoexec.bat
C:config.sys

The virus creates a file called ‘gum.mrc’ in the directory where the IRC client “Mirc” is usually located:

C:Mircgum.mrc

The virus then writes autorun instructions for gum.mrc to the “mirc.ini”, the “Mirc” configuration file.

As a result, all users who connect to an IRC channel which the victim machine is also connected to will be sent the following files:

C:Mircdownloadgum.html
C:Mircdownloadgum.gif

Removal instructions

If your computer does not have an up-to-date antivirus, or does not have an antivirus solution at all, follow the instructions below to delete the malicious program:

  1. Delete the original virus file (the location will depend on how the program originally penetrated the victim machine).
